Allure's Quarterly Beauty Box

This isn't a new review - I haven't been shopping since before Christmas, so I honestly have no real finds to show off! Between Christmas, New Years, and my boyfriend's birthday (December 28), I've had no real time to find things to show off.

So, instead, I'd like to show off what was one of the best deals I've gotten all year, because it truly impressed me. Once a quarter, Allure does a huge beauty box for $44.95 + shipping. They run out within a couple hours. Winter 2014 was my first time participating - but I will definitely be buying again! I was very impressed with the amount of items, quality of the items picked, and overall value. I gave some items as gifts, tried out many, and I still have many more stored away for a rainy day.

The box itself was large, but not to the extent of a moving box. It sure was heavy though!! Allure does list all products ahead of time, so there is really no "mystery" about this box. You know what you are getting, and you can determine if the value is right for you. After shipping, I paid roughly $60 for this box.

Here's my first peak inside. As you can see, the box was stuffed to the brim!! Once I took everything out, I had trouble fitting it back in. All the items are full size, and I was very impressed with the selection - it was honestly all thing I would buy and use. One thing that does seem odd, though, is that some items are color specific - so they won't work for everyone.

Unpacking the box really was a lot of fun. $60 is a lot to spend up front, but I definitely feel like I received more than $60 in product (which I did, LOL - well over $250). I thought this was a great blend of staples and fun items, with great drugstore brands and higher end items. It was a perfect balance that should appeal to everyone.

Here's the details:

ALOXXI Conditioning Detangler

I really like this item. My hair needs all the moisture it can get in the winter, and I've been using this daily. It's a pricey bottle of leave-in conditioner, but I'm enjoying it and it will last a very long time - the bottle is huge!!!
BIORÉ® Self Heating One Minute Mask

I'm a mask fanatic, but I can't lie - I haven't tried this one yet. I am a big fan of charcoal masks though, so when I get over my (slightly extreme) obsession with the Origins Charcoal Mask, I will definitely give this one a shot.
BURT’S BEES® Cucumber & Sage Facial Cleansing Towelettes
Another huge win for me - I use face cleaning towelettes every single morning. I shower at night (which is when I scrub my face), and these are just perfect for morning time, or a very late night when I can't be bothered to do a full face wash.
CETAPHIL®  Intensive Moisturizing Cream
My boyfriend claimed this one, but I've been using it a little on the sly. I really like how very moisturizing it is for winter skin - we'll use this one a lot.
CLEAN & CLEAR® Morning Burst® Hydrating Gel Moisturizer
I'm not sure how often I'll use a gel moisturizer in winter - my skin DRINKS my L'occitane Divine Cream, which is a very thick moisturizer. This one is shelved until spring, but I do like the idea of a lighter morning moisturizer when my skin isn't so parched.
COLGATE OPTIC WHITE® Toothbrush + Built-In Whitening Pen
I like this toothbrush. It's not too rough on my teeth, and I like the plastic bits that really seem to get my teeth nice and scrubbed. I don't notice a huge difference with the whitening pen, but maybe I'm just expected a full white stripes difference. Overall, though, I probably would have purchased this myself to try because it's a fun toy, LOL

COLGATE OPTIC WHITE® Platinum Whiten & Protect Toothpaste
This toothpaste is really awesome. Okay, so it's just toothpaste...but it's toothpaste I didn't have to go out and buy, and I like it.
CURÉL® SKINCARE Rough Skin Rescue Lotion
This is the lotion we use in our house anyway, so it's a very welcome addition. We keep a bottle in every vanity - it works great against dry skin.

Dove White Beauty Bar
Here's another staple in our house - Dove soap bars. They're very moisturizing and gentle on winter skin. This kit came with two - and saved me or the boyfriend a trip to the store.
JERGENS® Natural Glow® 3 Days To Glow™ Moisturizer
I haven't tried this yet, but I definitely am "fair to medium" (more on the fair side), and I do love self-tanner. I just haven't broken any out this winter - mostly due to lack of time. Self-tanner requires your shower to be done and time to be left in the night to let it sit - and I'm usually limited on my alone time. Next week, my boyfriend goes back to school, and I plan on brightening my winter skin a bit.
JOHN FRIEDA® Brilliant Brunette® Colour Protecting Moisturising Conditioner
If you aren't brunette, this color specific item may be a bit odd, but honestly, I think it works no matter what your color. I'm a very light brunette right now. I haven't used this conditioner from the package, but John Frieda is a drugstore standby for me. Right now, I'm trying to get my hair back to a healthy state, but I'm keeping this container on stand-by for my next "I need conditioner" moment.
JOHN FRIEDA® Colour Refreshing Gloss For Cool Brunettes
This is the one item I really don't think will work for everyone. I've been using it myself lately, however, because it does work for my light brown hair. It's actually fantastic!! The color is a very light application - it's not going to give you the effect that dying your hair would. What it does do, however, is refresh your color. It restores that "just colored" appearance without much darkening, cleans up the tone, and gives you a more polished look. I find it lasts for about 4 days, and I wash my hair every other day - so two shampoos. I've been reapplying weekly. This is actually an item that I may continue buying, although I'll go for a warmer tone next time.

JOHN FRIEDA® Frizz Ease® Nourishing Oil Elixir
This is a huge bottle that will last me a very, very long time. I've been wanting to try this item, but I've been polishing off another frizz helping product (a tiny .17 oz sample that's lasted me a month, so honestly, this is probably a year+ supply for me). I can't wait to give this a shot.
NEUTROGENA® Hydro Boost Water Gel
This is a brand new item from Neutrogena with great reviews. It's another gel moisturizer, so for me, it's shelved until Spring. I'm looking forward to it though!
NOT YOUR MOTHER’S® Whip It Up™ Cream Styling Mousse
Oh my god, this mousse smells SO good. I'm not usually a big mousse user, but I really love this one. It doesn't wear heavy *at all* and it smells like a cupcake.
ORGANIC DOCTOR Organic Manuka Honey Hand & Nail Cream
I gave this to my sister, although it sounds utterly amazing!
Organic Doctor Organic Virgin Coconut Oil Hydrating Radiance Elixir
There's something about coconut oil that just works amazing on skin and hair. I will definitely get a lot of use out of this one - no review yet though!
PHYSICIANS FORMULA® Nude Wear™ Glowing Nude Blush–Rose
This is another item I haven't tried, but the color is amazing, and I'm certain I'll love it once I get the opportunity.
RUSK®  Texture*
Rusk texture is an awesome volumizer that I will completed enjoy using once I finish my Alterna Bamboo volumizing spray.

SALLY HANSEN® Complete Salon Manicure™
Again, I haven't tried this yet, but I will so look forward to it.
SCÜNCI®  Hair-Emergency Kit
I am a bit obsessed with this kit. I'm always losing, breaking, and running out of hair ties. This travel kit holds onto everything I might need, and I love love love all the pieces to it. The clear bands do tend to break on me, though...but it's perfect for what I needed.
SHEAMOISTURE Superfruit Complex Body Lotion
I gave this out as a gift, but it looks awesome!!!
SPLAT Hair Chalk
Temporary hair color is something I've never tried before and always wanted to. This color works really well, but my boyfriend *hates* it and threw it out on me. Super lame, because I thought it would be great for Bonnaroo!

STYLE SEXY HAIR® H2No 3 Day Style Saver Dry Shampoo
This dry shampoo works AMAZING, and I'm a huge dry shampoo fan. I'm very happy with this inclusion!!

Overall, I would say this was $60 well spent!!

Subscription Box Deals - Rue La La

A lot of times when I want to try a subscription box, I look for deals to do so for cheap. I signed up for two today at Rue La La - an awesome deal website.

Check out their subscription box deals now!

Rue La La

I grabbed a three month subscription to Beauty Army for $23 (beauty and makeup), and a one month subscription to Urthbox for $10 (organic snacks). I'll look forward to trying these out and giving you my reviews!

If you haven't tried Popsugar yet, the $24.99 deal is a steal.

I can't wait to try these new subscriptions - that's 4 "presents" I can expect over the next 3 months, for $33!

Nordstrom Rack - Clear the Racks + Worn and Refinished!

For those of you that live near this mecca of shopping, I'm infinitely jealous. When I have lived near Nordstrom Rack in the past, about half my free money goes to this store. The entire store is great - but their worn-and-refinished shoes, purses, and clothing are what I'm really looking for.

For those not yet in the know, Worn and Refinished is a type of item that Nordstrom Rack's put out on their shelves. 95% of the time, these items are still full price in Nordstrom stores - they're just either damaged, returned, or floor models that have been, as the title suggests, "refinished." Worn and Refinished is a little like an easter egg hunt... you're unlikely to get exactly what you are looking for, unless you stalk every blog, forum, and NR twitter account. But those moments when you find this season's Louboutins you were drooling over for $80? You'll never forget those moments.

Here's another tip - all Worn and Refinished items are actually considered clearance. That means when it's Clear the Racks time, they're always an extra 25% off!!

If I had a Nordstrom Rack nearby, you better believe I'd be there December 26th, ready to rock this sale. Just because I can't participate doesn't mean I won't share my intel though!

Go, find me the best W&R deal you can, and post it here so I can drool over your lovely, cheap, this-season finds.

Walmart Beauty Box - Winter 2014 Review

For those of you who still are hesitant jumping into subscription boxes for beauty, I get it. It took me a year or more to commit to trying them, even at $15 or less. I have a suggestion though - and bear with me, because those of you that are looking for the fashionista experience may just think I've lost my mind.

May I suggest the Walmart beauty box?

It's $5, ships free, and features samples / travel sizes / even full sizes of drug store brand makeup. Heck, I'm a high end girl - I obsess over wanting to try Kerastase shampoo and I live for Chanel coco shine lip gloss. But this is my second Walmart beauty box, and frankly, right now, I'm not looking back. Another nice thing about this box is that it's quarterly, meaning it's not nearly as large of a commitment. I can easily say yes to $20/year, and you can quit anytime if it goes downhill. It's billed $5 at a time, so it's really an easy commitment - it's basically a Starbucks.

I paid for this subscription, and all reviews of items and value come from my own opinions.

The walmart beauty box doesn't have as shockingly high of a value as many beauty boxes, but for $5, it really doesn't matter. I actually didn't realize I was getting this box - I purchased the fall box and sort of forgot. It was a pleasant surprise, and the contents thrilled me! There are four variations on this box, and while mine were some of the lowest priced mixes, they were actually somewhat perfect for me. I don't know how they did it, but I will not only use anything - I actually love everything!

L'Oreal® Paris Hair Expertise OleoTherapy Replenishing Shampoo and Conditioner – 2 ounces each - Value $2.82, Full Size $5.99 each

I'm actually geeking out a little over this. First, it's loreal. I've never used Loreal before, but they make Kerastase, which I read rave reviews on almost daily. I have a mini hair obsession, because my hair is dry and unruly! I'm trying anything to tame it. This shampoo and conditioner felt, to me, like a great intro to the brand I've been dying to try.

Second, it's sulfate free. Score!!

Third, I have dry, damaged hair. This particular formula is infused with oil, which I really can't wait to try. It's so different than the other kits I've been trying out lately, namely Living Proof (meh.) and Alterna (which I like so far...but not enough to commit forever).

So, sure, it only was about $2.82 in product. But I really, really, really wanted to try it. I even looked at this exact formula at Target the day I got it. So in my opinion, if I would have even paid $2.18 for the rest of the box, I'd leave happy.

Oh - and it works awesome. I won't be 100% satisfied until I actually try Kerastase, but everyone was complimenting my hair Sunday, which is when I first tried it. I wash my hair every other day, so we'll see if it's just as great tonight. At 25% of the cost of the Alterna shampoo, I may just prefer this one.

Although - odd note, this formula is NOT on the Walmart website. So my link goes to Target - sorry Walmart!

Maybelline Color Sensations - Maple Kiss–  .15 oz - Full Size $4.97

Another winner for me - I'm a big neutral lipstick fan. This shade is darker than my usual color, which means it's not a dupe for anything I own. It's wearable enough that, even with my fair skin, it's work appropriate. It's also much easier to dress up than my usual barely there work shades.

Texture wise, well, it's no Bite lipstick or Chanel Coco Shine. It's a more matte finish than I'm used to, and it feels like it. There's no softness or glossiness to speak of. But remember - all I need to keep me happy is to feel like the rest of the box was worth a little over $2. And I'd have bought this lipstick for $2 - the color is perfect.

Olay Fresh Effects Everything Off! Deluxe Make-Up Removal Wet Cloths – 7 Sheets - Value $1.11

Another cheap sample, but I'm a religious user of make-up remover wipes. These are literally perfect for me. I mentioned earlier than I'm trying to wash my hair every other day. Well, that really limits how close I want to get to my hairline in the shower. Make-up wipes keep me feeling like I fully scrubbed the day off, while I baby my hair to get it back to healthy. Oh Walmart, how does your beauty department know me so well?

Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream, Light Skin Tones - 1 ounce - Value $1.60, full size $11.97

This cream is one sample I didn't expect to wow me, but it's actually really nice! I started using it Sunday, and it claims that you see effects in 5 days, so stand by for an update!!

The other samples in the kit include a small foil of Nivea Cocoa Butter and Maybelline Powder, along with a coupon for each. I don't really consider these value-adding items, but it was nice to have them thrown in.

Total Review: This box has a value of $10.50, which is honestly below the advertised value of $20, but I'm personally thrilled. I might not have been so happy if the kit wasn't exactly for me, but somehow, this one just hit all the right notes. I'm glad I paid $5.00 for it, and I'll look forward to seeing if Walmart will up the value, given several people seem a bit disappointed.

Sample Society Review - December 2014

My newest obsession in the shopping world is subscription boxes. I've only started collecting these splurge-worthy boxes this season, but the couple I've chosen to try out have blown me away. To launch this blog, I would like to review one of the first boxes I purchased - Beauty Bar's Sample Society box. The Sample Society mystery box is usually $15.00 a month, but I used a coupon to save $5.00 off my first box, which I will link to below. On top of the samples, you will receive a $10 off $50 coupon each month to use at Beauty Bar. If you're a sample fanatic like me, you may actually use this - their sample mystery packs are super fun, and I'll review them later.

Allure Sample Society is a monthly beauty and make-up subscription from BeautyBar.com and Allure Magazine. This was my first month receiving their beauty box, and if this is what I can expect every month, I'm excited! This may be a subscription I stick around with - $15 isn't a ton to spend each month, with each sample (or full size item!) costing $3/each.

Coupon: Get $5 off your first box with coupon code 5ForYou. No expiration date is listed.

I paid for this subscription, and all reviews of items and value come from my own opinions.

One thing that I really like about the Allure Beauty Box (in addition to the awesome value!) is that the company puts together a mini-magazine that shows you all of the products, why they were chosen, and their value. Beauty Bar takes it a step farther, too - they also provide links on their site for you to review or purchase those items if you're interested afterwards.

I was super impressed by the contents of this box. Two items were full sized beauty products from high end brands, 1 was a travel size for purchase, and the two samples were generous, very high end products that I loved trying!!

Butter London Tinted Lippy Balm - Strawberry Fields – Full size lip balm - Value $20

The texture of this balm is incredible for winter - very hydrating. like a lip balm should be. The color is highly pigmented!! Maybe not to the extent of a lipstick, but on my fair skin, it's not an every day color. I wish it was, though, because the texture and hydration blow me away. I'd purchase another of these lip balms given the right sale in a heartbeat.

Note: Colors will vary box to box. You may or may not receive the same lip balm as me.

Burberry Beauty Fresh Glow Luminous Fluid Base– 5 ml - Sample Value $7.92; Full Size $48

This highlight goes on very sheer. The recommendations in the box show to mix it with foundation, which I have done. This highlighter is not really meant for spot highlighting - it's just too sheer to work for that. It does make for a gorgeous dewy complexion though! I've enjoyed trying this - I love Burberry. I wouldn't purchase it going forward, because I'm more of a targeted highlighter girl - I can't live without Touché Eclait.

RGB nail polish in Oxblood – Full Size - Value $18

I love this nail polish! This and the lip balm made this box a no-brainer for me. It dries in seconds, and the color is a beautiful opaque deep red with dark, dark undertones. It's sexy, a little vampy, but surprisingly wearable on my pale skin. And bonus - all the full size items (and even the samples) came in gorgeous stock boxes. If you need little gifts, this is really great!

Crabtree & Evelyn Ultra – Moisturizing Hand Therapy in La Source –25 g - Value $8

I like this hand cream. It dries quickly, and I will definitely use it. I keep a handcream in my purse literally all the time. I'm a little obsessed with Caudalie right now, but when I run low on that one, I'll be sticking this cream in my makeup bag. I don't know that it's one I'll keep repurchasing - I prefer my standby for every day. But it's certainly useful!!

Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye Gel – 5 ml - Value $19.61

This is the only sample I haven't tried yet, because I'm bombarded with eye cream at the moment and it takes me a while to finish one. I'm currently using Tarte's brightening cream from an amazing advent calendar my mom got me from Ulta - but this one is next on my list!! Reviews seem strong, so I'm excited. I may just have to start an eye cream chart though - I believe I now have 5 to try out.

Total Review: This box has a value of $73.53 – and I spent $10! I really love this box - so much so that I actually purchased a second one! The full size products make amazing gifts for the cost, and I will use and really enjoy everything. Keep your fingers crossed that I get to try a different color lip balm - I'd love one of the neutrals that pretty much everyone else complains about!!

It's too late to subscribe for December, but you can still buy the box!! Here's the link:
December Beauty Box

This is not an affiliate link, and I make no money by providing you this information. I just want to share a fun deal!

Welcome!

Welcome to Fine on a Dime! My name is Nicole, and I'm a classic case of champagne taste on a beer budget. My dreams are filled with Lanvin, Paris, and Dom Perignon - but my days are filled with a standard 8-5 job, a home I'm renting, and a couple of awesome roommates.

I refuse to accept that I simply can't afford the life I want. With a little creativity and thrifty mentality, I've managed to pull off the unthinkable. And with any luck, I'm hoping this blog brings at least a little bit of luxury to your life, in a way that fits your budget.

I'll be the first to admit I have a bit of a shopping addiction. There's a certain j' ne c'est quoi about finding something that makes you feel special for a price that fits your budget. I am always looking for a deal. Getting a great price on something makes me like it all the more.

In this blog, I'll share my thrifty finds and ways that you can have it all - and still make rent (or mortgage) on time. I shop everything - thrift and consignment stores, sales, subscription boxes, coupons, samples. If there's a deal to be had, I'm on top of it. And now, you will be, too.
